The Coffee Cooperatives

In Peru, Honduras, and India, coffee farmers have formed cooperatives and, in addition to fair pay, are committed to the social development of their respective regions and sustainable farming practices. For our shade tree project, we’ve partnered with seven Fairtrade-certified cooperatives. Together with our local partners, we’re adapting coffee cultivation to climate change and planting shade trees—one for every package sold.*

*Applies to single-origin coffees from Honduras and Peru sold in retail stores, 1,000 g packages of Café Crème and Espresso Intensivo, and the Bio Gustoso products from the foodservice line. Since October 2024, 487,472 shade trees have been planted in Peru, Honduras, and India (as of August 2026)

Anyone who wants to make a difference can use some support.

That’s why Fairtrade Germany is helping us implement our shade tree project. For example, Fairtrade supports us with comprehensive on-site reporting—providing both you and us with the necessary transparency regarding our progress. On the ground in Peru, Honduras, and India, Fairtrade is represented by CLAC and NAPP—networks of Fairtrade-certified producers in Latin America and India. CLAC and NAPP ensure that coffee farmers are involved in all important decisions and support the cooperatives with advice and practical assistance in implementing them.

The Cooperative

Since late 2025, the Manarcadu Social Service Society (MASS) from the Indian state of Kerala has been participating in Café Intención’s shade-grown coffee project. The cooperative supplies the Robusta beans used in Café Intención’s specialty espressos.

Peru

The Cooperative

The Agraria Sangareni Cooperative is located in the central Peruvian Andes in the Junín region. Here, 233 producers grow coffee at altitudes ranging from 1,200 to 1,700 meters. The combination of altitude, climate, and the fertile soils of the Andes creates ideal conditions for high-quality coffee.

The Cooperative

It all began here in 2003 following a project by Wageningen University in the Netherlands. Valle Ubiriki has been Fairtrade-certified since 2006 and, thanks to better green coffee prices, has had a positive impact on the entire region.

At Valle Grande, more than 600 coffee farmers from the region work together. The cooperative is committed to sustainable coffee farming and strengthens the economic prospects of local families.

The Cooperative

In the Cajamarca region of Peru, the members of La Prosperidad de Chirinos grow high-quality Arabica coffee. The cooperative combines many years of experience with the goal of sustainably strengthening coffee cultivation in the region.

The Cooperative

The APROCOMSA Cooperative supports its members in jointly marketing their coffee and securing better terms in the trade. In addition, it promotes the exchange of knowledge and experiences among coffee farmers, thereby strengthening the development of the entire community.

The Cooperative

The Asoprosan organization was founded in 2017 and supports its members in sustainable coffee cultivation. Just one year later, the organization received Fairtrade certification and has since been committed to organic farming and fair trade practices.
